Maharashtra’s Labour minister announces ₹600 crore skill development centres for construction workers at CREDAI Pune’s Construction Safety Awards.

The Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI) Pune hosted its annual Construction Safety Awards at the Sheraton Grand, Pune on 27 April 2026. The event was attended by over 300 CREDAI members and representatives from construction sites. Akash Pandurang Fundkar, Minister of Labour, Government of Maharashtra, attended as chief guest. Devendra P. Pothphode, Chief Fire Officer (PDRF & Fire), PMRDA, and Bharat Jaisinghani, Joint Managing Director, Polycab India Ltd, attended as guests of honour. A Safety Souvenir was unveiled at the event.

Fundkar said that the Government of Maharashtra was planning “an investment of nearly ₹600 crore to establish world-class, modern skill development centres for construction workers” in Mumbai and Nagpur, focusing on advanced technologies, modern equipment, and creating a workforce capable of meeting the demands of the sector.

BOCW welfare push

Fundkar said that welfare cess was being collected through the construction sector, but that the real challenge lay in its efficient utilisation and in ensuring that benefits reached every genuine worker. He called for stronger awareness, better worker registration under the Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) Act, and coordinated engagement between the government and industry. He invited CREDAI Pune to partner in worker registration, welfare outreach, skilling, safety training, and awareness initiatives.

J. P. Shroff, Vice President, CREDAI Pune, and Chairman of the Labour Welfare Committee, said that construction had “evolved from a seasonal occupation into a stable livelihood for millions of families,” and that research showed improved worker safety, training, and living conditions could “enhance productivity by 8–10%.” He noted that significant funds were available under BOCW welfare schemes.
